The following Howard County residents were winners in the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish History essay in the "Irish Contributions to Pop Culture" category: Derek Marrie, Katherine Rosinski, Stephen Decatur, Eileen Forsyth and James McKitrick.

Matthew Keels, son of Washington and Barbara Keels, of Columbia and Ellicott City, has been awarded an all-expenses-paid summer study trip to Germany courtesy of the American Association of Teachers of German testing program. Matthew left for Germany June 24. He is a student at Wilde Lake High School.
