Kathie and Bruce Smith, of Ellicott City, announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily Elena Smith, to Anthony Santo Battista, son of Rosemary and Frank Battista, of Hershey, Pa.

The bride-to-be is a 2000 graduate of Centennial High School and a 2004 graduate of the University of Richmond, where she received a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in religion. She recently received her master's degree through George Washington University's Physician's Assistant Program and will be working as a physicians assistant in Washington, D.C.

The future groom is a 2000 graduate of Hershey High School and a 2004 graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He is currently a fourth-year medical student at George Washington University's Medical School.

A September wedding is planned.
