The couple met at Tennessee Temple College (now Tennessee Temple University) in Chattanooga, Tenn., and were married in the chapel on the campus on Sept. 3, 1948. Her father, the Rev. William M. Bayne and Dr. Lee Roberson, president of the college, officiated.
She is from LaFayette, Ga., and he is from Atlanta.
They were summer student missionaries for the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Alabama, North Carolina, California and Oklahoma. He was later the pastor of Southern Baptist churches and chapels in Iowa, Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland.
The couple has two sons and two daughters. A third son died in infancy. They also have one daughter-in-law and two sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren in Ellicott City, Fallston, Baltimore County and Wilmington, N.C.
They both attended South Western Baptist Theological in Fort Worth, Texas, where Rev. Asbury received a bachelors and masters of divinity.
Rev. Asbury is a former school teacher and church financial secretary. He served for several years in the security department of AAI Corp., in Cockesyville, where he welcomed U.S. Senate and House of Representatives members, military, government and other visitors to the corporation.
He has advocated for voluntary prayer and Bible reading in public schools for 40 years.
They currently attend and are members of Bethany Lane Baptist Church in Ellicott City, where the Rev. J. Kip Smith presides.
