Josh Anderson performing at The Judges Bench Pub

I ran into Jean Anderson at Wal-mart and was delighted to get the chance to catch up. Jean is a life-long Ellicott City resident and still lives on Old Columbia Pike in the house her parents bought in the mid-1940s.I hadn’t seen her since our sons were friends at Ellicott Mills Middle School.

We lost touch when they went to different high schools. She told me Josh graduated from Centennial High School in 2002 and Frostburg State University (cum laude) in 2006 where he majored in pre-medical biology with a minor in chemistry. He is studying to be a physician’s assistant and still plays the violin. He also plays the mandolin and performs at open mic nights at The Judge’s Bench and The Phoenix Emporium, in Ellicott City.

He and his friend, Zach Ambros, will be playing at the Judge’s Bench Pub Saturday, July 26 at 9 p.m. “We play mostly alternative music, covers and originals — Dave Matthews Band, Damien Rice, Johnny Cash, Sublime — a good mix of things,” Josh said. Call 410-465-3497 for more information.

We’ve always known, and now Money magazine is telling everyone, that Ellicott City is one of the best places to live. Along with our sister city Columbia, we are ranked No. 8 in the magazine’s annual list of the “100 Best Places to Live in America.”Categories included factors such as housing, education and quality of life, as well as crediting our “charm, comfort and careful zoning.” Ellicott City was noted for its historic district lined with antique shops and teahouses and Columbia for its design of residential villages around the town center and abundance of open space. Congratulations to Scott and Julia Alexander on the birth of their son, Dominic John Alexander, born July 9 weighing in at 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 21 inches long. My father always said good people should have lots of children. I hope Dominic is the first of many to bless the Alexander family.
