By Chuck Gait
Posted: November 26, 2008

I love writing about our young men and women who are trying to make a difference in this world. Let me tell you about one such young man, Air Force Airman Rolando V. Garcia. His parents, Rolando and Sandra Garcia, of Fulton, must be very proud of him. He recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio. Rolando is a 2006 graduate of Reservoir High School.

Fulton Teens Work To Support Homeless Mom

By Chuck Gait
Posted: November 26, 2008

I got an e-mail from Mary Ann Souder, mother of Reservoir High School student Marlee Souder. Marlee is in Kerri Midiri’s class, part of the Teacher’s Academy whose aim is to help students that have a desire to become teachers.

Midiri’s class has adopted a homeless family for the holidays and the students are trying to come up with ways to earn money so that they can, in turn, give this single mother of four girls a very, merry Christmas.

Marlee and her friend, Savannah Geyer, came up the with idea of having a bake sale. The postmaster of the Fulton Post Office, Postmaster Barbara Howe, graciously allowed them on the premises for the bake sale, which took place Nov. 15. Mary Ann wrote that “the girls were simply amazed that, in these tough economic times, just how generous the community of Fulton was.”

Not only did they sell out in record time — 2 hours — but also received donations from well wishers. These two young ladies “would like to thank the community for their success” and to “let them know that because of their generosity they will be able to help this family have a nice Christmas”. Ann wrote further, “believe me, the girls were simply amazed and very appreciative of the community support!” I couldn’t have said it any better.

Mt. Zion Mission 5K run/1K walk today

By Chuck Gait
Posted: November 15, 2008

A year ago, I had one of those “wake-up calls” that literally changed my life. As a result, I have been exercising regularly and am in much better shape than now then I was 10 years ago. Something that I do about five times a week is to spend 30 minutes on a treadmill going 4 MPH at a 10-percent incline. And, it’s boring. I’d much rather be outside walking but the problem with that is I get to daydreaming and slow down.

But, I digress. The point of the story is to exercise, to get the old ticker beating at 85 percent of its maximum rate. Then, when you feel up to it, try adding a little competition to change things up a little. The doctors will always tell you to start small and build up. How about a 5K run/1 mile walk? That’ll be a good tune-up and maybe whet your appetite for more. Highland resident Carol Hill sent me an e-mail inviting you all to one that a group from her church is sponsoring.

The Mt. Zion Mission Mississippi team is having a 5K run/1M walk on Saturday Nov. 15 at 9 a.m. at Meadowbrook Park in Ellicott City. The cost is pretty reasonable: $15 for a single entry gets you a T-shirt; $35 per family of 4 gets you 2 Tees. There will be other shirts available for purchase too. Prizes will be awarded plus there will be volunteers on hand, manning the hydration stations.

The proceeds will benefit the Mt. Zion UMC’s 2008 Volunteers in Mission Trip to Mississippi by “providing help and hope to the victims of Hurricane Katrina”. Carol is part of the mission trip. She wrote “this is such a great trip to help people rebuild their lives after Katrina when they think there is no hope. We give them just that ~ hope that their lives will be better because of what we can do for them.”

Extreme Makeover, Local style

By Chuck Gait
Posted: November 15, 2008

I bumped into Mike Martin, a family friend. I’ve known Mike now about 20 years. He went to school with a couple of the nephews and has remained close to them. His girlfriend, Liz Lazzara, has a daughter named Rachel Gross. Her business, Biago Boutique and Day Spa, is partnering with several local businesses and sponsoring a makeover for one lucky customer.

Now, it’s too late to nominate anyone for the makeover but you are all invited to the event which will take place Saturday, Nov. 22. The spa is in Clarksville at 5809 Clarksville Square Drive, Suite 203. That’s the little strip shopping center across from the Giant on Clarksville Pike (Route 108). The lucky woman will receive the “Royal Beauty Treatment” to include a makeover by the day spa’s Glam Squad, a new outfit supplied by Simply Divine Boutique at Maple Lawn Farms, jewelry by Carol Hayes, a Silpada distributor, a photo shoot by Ian Dawson of IKD Photography of Laurel, and a reveal party (fashion-show-style) and dinner for two at Oz CHOPHOUSE of Maple Lawn Farms.

For more information, you can contact the spa at 410-531-5730.
