Ilene Jones, of Laurel and a registered nurse with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, has been named as a finalist in Nursing Spectrum's 2008 Nursing Excellence awards. The annual recognition program recognizes nurses from all levels of patient care who have demonstrated exceptional management of nursing or patient care services.

Altimax Solutions and Aimstar Information Solutions Inc. -- residents of the Howard County Center for Business and Technology Development's NeoTech Incubator -- have been awarded a contract with the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber, to redesign and redevelop the chamber's Web site and its underlying database. The redesigned Web site is slated for launch early in the third quarter.
The Columbia Association has announced that Versar Inc., an environmental planning, engineering and remedial services firm, will design and help implement an effective watershed restoration and stewardship plan to improve water quality and habitat in Columbia. Watershed investigations begin this month.

Casey Baynes, a Howard County resident and founder and executive director of the Casey Cares Foundation, has been selected as one of Kraft Foods' 100 Extraordinary Women, based on a 100-word essay nominating Baynes. She won a three-day, two-night round trip to the Los Angeles Film Festival that was held June 27-29, and participated in a photo shoot to be featured in one or more national magazines.
The Arc of Howard County has recognized Life Time Fitness, in Columbia and its operations department director, Brian Hawkins, with a Celebration of Excellence Award, presented to individuals and groups that have provided innovative programs and opportunities for people with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Hawkins was cited for his planning, communications and person-centered attitude.
Howard Community College's athletic director, Diane Schumacher, has been named an Athletic Director of the Year by The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Schumacher is one of 30 athletic directors across to be named for this year's award.

Nancy Lauer, of Ellicott City, is the recipient of the 2007 Maryland Historical Society's Sumner A. Parker Award for her book, "Family Diversity, The Lauer, Borgmeier, Bauer Families -- Deutschland to Baltimore, Maryland and the MacCubbin's 1650 to 2006, Volume II." Lauer received the award June 21. She also won third place in the Original Research Story Category of the 2008 International Society of Family History Writers and Editors Excellence in Writing Contest, for her research paper, "When a Brick Wall Crumbles onto the Wrong Path."
Merkle, a database marketing agency based in Columbia, has appointed Ed Forman as vice president of professional services in the commercial database group and Najeeb Uddin as vice president of database solutions. Forman will be based in Little Rock, Ark.; Uddin will be based in Columbia.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, in Columbia, and the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Care Foundation were recently honored by the American Heart Association as a Heart and Stroke National Champion. The award is presented to the American Heart Association's top supporting companies in recognition of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage's support and participation in the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walks.
Larry Collins, of Columbia, has been appointed by the Massachusetts of Technology Enterprise Forum as executive director of the Howard Technology Council to its Washington-Baltimore Board of Advisors. Collins will provide guidance and resources to support the forum. He will also provide opportunities for networking, growing and building high technology companies in the area, as well as serve as a forum panelist for case presentations.
