Shelby Smith, Ryann Lillis and Emily Riviello are talented Elkridge teens! They will be performing with The Teen Professional Theater in an original musical adaptation of "Phantom of the Opera" at Toby's Dinner Theater, in Columbia.
The "Phantom" performance dates are July 24-27 with matinee and evening shows. Tickets are now available by calling 410-381-0700. Get your tickets early. There is even a discount rate for groups, so gather some friends and go see the show!
I understand that the Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts has a long history of top-notch productions. It is very competitive to be selected for the group, so it promises to be a great show.
Toby Orenstein is the founder and artistic director for CCTA. According to the group's Web site, www.cctarts.com, "Toby believes that if you can reach a child at a young age -- while their mental and physical skills are still developing -- you can steer them away from anti-social behaviors, help them develop coping skills, and help build higher self-esteem, transforming their lives and enriching the community."
Congratulations to Smith, Lillis, Riviello and all the other Howard County teens performing in "Phantom."
Pat Green is the head coach of the Howard Lions ice hockey team, which consists of student players from Howard High School. The team is presently seeking incoming freshmen, transfer students, and any other experienced ice hockey players who attend Howard High School and are interested in joining the team for the upcoming season. The team is in particular need of players with goal tending skills.
Students who want to participate should e-mail coach Green at letsgocapitals@verizon.net or call 410-796-0676. The club will be participating at both the varsity and junior varsity level.
Green was the assistant coach of the Lions team last year and was previously the coach of the Mt. Hebron Vikings' hockey team. While coaching the Vikings, he was named Howard County Hockey Coach of the Year by the Washington Post.
The Howard Lions, and all county high-school level ice hockey teams, play in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League on a "club team" level -- as do other sports such as swimming -- and receive no funding from Howard County Public Schools.
Sometimes an old-fashioned bingo excursion just hits the spot. Mark your calendars now for Aug. 17 to enjoy bingo, lunch and a bake sale, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW Post 8097 on Montevideo Road, down the road in Jessup.
The lunch portion of the day begins at noon and the bingo games will be played from 1 until 4 p.m.
All the proceeds from the afternoon will benefit the VFW Scholarship fund. Admission is free, with a very reasonable donation requested for the luncheon.
If you have any questions, or would like to contribute towards the fund, call Barbara Heckendorf at 410-799-5267.
The Elkridge Heritage Society had a very pleasant July meeting at the Elkridge library recently. All enjoyed Joetta Cramm's slide presentation of old Elkridge.
Those in attendance visited over refreshments, which were provided by Helen Croft and Maryanna Ciepiela. Congratulations to these kind ladies for being this week's friendliest neighbors of Elkridge! They are always very thoughtful, and have been offering snacks for the Elkridge Heritage Society meetings for a few years now.
"Maryanna's homemade chocolate cookies for this meeting were especially enjoyed," Jean Campen said.
For future meetings of the Heritage Society -- and this is the part where your assistance is requested -- the planning committee would appreciate pictures, slides or movies of Elkridge residents or families in community settings.
