The Senior Center, at 9525 Durness Lane, is collecting donations for hospitalized American veterans. Toiletries, socks, combs, new paperbacks and playing cards are needed. The goal of the Center is to fill 100 drawstring bags by Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Kindergarten and new student orientation will take place Aug. 21 at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. respectively at Gorman Crossing Elementary School. Each orientation session will last approximately 30 minutes.
Lime Kiln Middle School will hold a special general membership meeting Aug. 20, 6:30 p.m., in the Media Center for the purpose of electing officers for the school year.
Announced candidates are Jeanne Lineberry for president, Sherri Tatum for first vice president, Gail Vaughn for second vice president, Dona DeZube for recording secretary and Carol Zimmerman for PTAC Delegate 2. A program at the Savage Branch Library, 9525 Durness Lane, will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, 7-8 p.m. for students making the big move to sixth grade. Survival skills, ways to meet new friends and study secrets will be offered.
Also at the Savage Library, a hands-on science project will be offered for ages 6 and up at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. Seniors are reminded that the Savage Senior Center, 9525 Durness Lane, offers Bingo from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Aug. 18 and 25 and Mah Jong on Friday, Aug. 15 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
HIV testing is available at the Howard County Health department, 9525 Durness lane. The testing is free and persons are not required to give their name. A counselor provides information about the test, helps to assess risks, discusses prevention and answers questions. Call 410-880-2323.
North Laurel students are reminded that if they plan to drive to school at any time during the 2008-2009 school year, they must attend a mandatory safe driving presentation with a parent. Students may not purchase a parking permit until they have attended the presentation.
Students may not park at school without a permit. Since driving plans change during the school year students who do not anticipate driving are encouraged to attend the sessions.
Reservoir High School will hold meetings in the auditorium on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. Call 410-888-8850 for more information including meetings at other schools.
