The PTSA and Student Government Association of Mt. Hebron High School announce a celebration of the life of Jim McCrumb, a former principal at the school. McCrumb, died June 21 and was principal of Mt. Hebron from 1967 to 1987.

The celebration will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Hebron High School. Call 410-313-2880 for more information.

In addition to being a great influence on many students and faculty, he was instrumental in establishing many of the traditions and organizations for which Mt. Hebron is presently noted.

The Orthodox Church of St. Matthew is planning its inaugural Multi-Cultural Fall Festival on Oct. 4 and 5 at the Kings Contrivance Interfaith Center and invites the public to experience and share a variety of cultures through food, music and family fun.

The event will transform the Kings Contrivance Interfaith Center parking area into an "Old World" venue where you can enjoy home-made Greek, Russian, Romanian, Mexican, and Lebanese foods, an extensive selection of ethnic desserts, a wine and beer garden, live hourly entertainment, children's activity area, silent auction; hand-made crafts, icon painting demonstrations and escorted church tours.

Several Ellicott City neighbors will be participating in the event. The Slavic foods team is organized by Anastasia Borichevsky with help from Natasha Jones, John, Deven and Robin Zahor, Sharon Cross and Stan and Carol Yunkunis. They are cooking borsch (traditional Russian soup), golubtsi (cabbage rolls stuffed with ground meat), and pirozhki (dough filled with beef, onion, and hardboiled egg).

Dana Potts oversees both the Romanian foods as well as desserts and is getting help making Romanian nut rolls, nut and poppy seed rolls, and Slavic nut rolls from Robin Zahor and Sharon Cross. Dana is also making Sarmale (Romanian cabbage rolls).

Consisting of 150 families, St. Matthew is a parish of the Orthodox Church of America, the first and only Orthodox Church in Columbia and is distinguished by its diverse representation of ethnic backgrounds.

Although the parish has been in existence since 1988, it has met in various Columbia Village Centers until its permanent home in the Kings Contrivance Village Center was completed in February 2007.

You can catch Jake Taylor, a junior at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, on the ESPN High School Football Game of the Week Thursday, Oct. 2 on ESPN2 at 6:30 p.m. when he and his teammates play Dematha High School.

A lifetime Ellicott City resident, Jake also plays basketball and baseball. He was named to the Montgomery County All Gazette First Team and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Third Team during his second year of varsity baseball, and was named 2008 Top Prospect and Top Underclassman at the Baseball Factory/Under Armour Tryout in Baltimore last spring.

Jake played quite a bit of baseball this summer, winning tournaments with the Diamond Skills Showcase team and the Maryland Falcons, ending the season with a bronze medal at the Division I Junior Olympics in Detroit.

"His one regret was not being able to attend the national tournament in Orlando with his Amateur Athletic Union basketball team, the Maryland Sure Shots," Jake's mom, Nan Taylor, said.

The other athlete in the family, Jake's sister, Emma, a sophomore at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa., was a member of the field hockey team who advanced to the Division III Final Four last year.

On the dean's list and a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association All Academic Squad, Emma has been accepted into a study abroad program and looks forward to studying in Italy this spring.
