A few years ago, five guys met during a technology transfer class at Howard Community College. The result of one of the case studies used for the class was the start of a new business, CrispTek, founded in 2007 by Ron Friedman, Wayne Swann, Roch Kallmyer, John Howell and Ray Jones.
The company's first goal was to develop the best gluten-free, low oil uptake frying batter. Its first product, Choice Batter, uses rice's natural water-absorbing characteristics to resist oil uptake when prepared as a batter coating for fried foods.
I think it's pretty exciting to know that right in our own area, a new company is working to make our diets healthier.
The initial rollout of Choice Batter is scheduled for later this fall and will be available for purchase online at www.Crisptek.com. For more information on CrispTek or Choice Batter, call 410-715-2009.
Make plans early to attend this year's 50+ Expo sponsored by the Howard County Office on Aging. This is the 10th anniversary of the Expo. It will be held Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road in Columbia. There will be more than 140 exhibitors, educational seminars, a health fair, flu shots, a diabetic screening, and entertainment.
St. Michael's Catholic Church will be sponsoring a blood drive in the gym Oct. 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 410-549-2355.
St. Michael's Catholic Church will be holding its monthly breakfast on Sept. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, cereal, chipped beef gravy and biscuits, hash browns, baked apples, muffins, toast, bagels, bacon, sausage, and beverages. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-10.
There will be a Teen Advisory Board meeting at the Glenwood Branch Library Monday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. for youth ages 10-17.
This group will meet to suggest books, music, movies, and classes for teens at the library. Refreshments will be provided. Service learning hours are available for some projects. No registration is required to attend the meeting.
This is a great opportunity for our younger members of the community to have a voice in choosing the books they want to read and the activities they want to participate in at the library.
