It wasn't a farmer in the dell, but County Executive Kenneth Ulman at Maple Dell Farm kicking off the county's fifth annual Farm-City Celebration Sept. 23 by trading places with dairy farmer Dave Patrick.

This 12-day celebration aims to "bridge the knowledge gap between urban citizens and agriculture in Howard County," according to the Economic Development Authority's Web site.

Several local farms and even the local libraries had a full schedule of events planned for the celebration. Some of these included the second annual Healthy Howard Family Walk at Clark's Elioak Farm Sept. 27, and the Farm Hertiage Days at the Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum Sept. 26-28, which featured vintage farm equipment demonstrations, live music and more.

"Because of the rain, our attendance was down, but I think it was a success. People had a good time," said Virginia Frank, co-chair of the Farm Heritage Days planning committee.

The last day of the celebration is Oct. 4.
