G & T Parent Academy> The Howard County Public School System gifted and talented education program will hold a Parent Academy session on Wednesday, Oct.1, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court in Columbia. The session will provide an overview of the Gifted and Talented Education Program at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for interested parents and community members.

Physical training for youth> The YMCA of Central Maryland is sponsoring three new classes designed for adolescents and teens to help them train their bodies to achieve their physical performance goals. The eight-week classes are led by Jeff Friday, former Baltimore Ravens coach. Talent Search> The 2009 Center for Talented Youth, sponsored by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, is now under way. The purpose of the talent search is to identify, assess, and recognize the academic abilities of highly able students. Second- through eighth-grade students with qualifying scores are eligible to participate. More information regarding the Center for Talented Youth talent search can be found at www.cty.jhu.edu/ts. The application deadline for December testers is Oct. 1. The application deadline for January/February. testers is Nov. 2.

Memorial for Jim McCrumb> The PTSA and Student Government Association of Mt. Hebron High School hosts "Celebration of the Life of Jim McCrumb," Saturday, Sept. 27, 2 p.m. at Mt. Hebron High School, 9440 Route 99, in the auditorium.

Twice Exceptional Learner> Individual Differences in Learning Association, Inc. will host its monthly speaker event Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m. at Linden Linthicum United Methodist Church, 1201 Linden Linthicum Lane in Clarksville. The topic is Using Data to Advocate for your Child. Speakers are Andrea Bennett and Lisa Frank, educational and behavioral consultants from The Special Kids Company who will discuss how you can work with the school to enhance your child's educational program. Participants will learn to identify the various forms of data, how to keep it organized, make sense of it, and present it to the school. Board of Education

Partnership with school system> A new partnership with Chapelgate Presbyterian Church will match volunteer mentors with participants in the Howard County Public School System teen parenting and outreach program to help students develop academic and life skills. Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Chapelgate Presbyterian Church agrees to provide four workshops each year to help students learn skills such as household budgeting. Church members will also offer tutoring assistance and provide a breakfast each month for students in the program. As resources allow, the church may also contribute financial assistance and supplies to meet the needs of the students and their families.

College News

The following are 2008 graduates from the University of Delaware: Amy Lynn McHale from Clarksville. Lauren Regina, Kendra Norris, Kristen Fiackos, Jacqueline Kostelecy, Philip Valle, and Kristin Lee Vorce, all from Ellicott City.

Dunloggin

Commemorate 35 years> Dunloggin Middle School is selling engraved bricks to commemorate its 35-year anniversary. The bricks are $35 and can have up to three lines, with 14 characters per line. They will be planted in the flagpole area in front of the school. Proceeds will go toward new choral risers and replacement desks. Howard Community

Business classes> Howard Community College's Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development will offer two business management classes: Managing Multiple Priorities and Managing Business Communications; Oct. 29 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at Belmont Conference Center, 6555 Belmont Woods Road in Elkridge.
