HC DrugFree, a nonprofit based in Columbia that helps the community raise drug-free teens, will hold free programs in October at two Columbia high schools.
The first, Oct. 7 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., is called "Teen2Teen: Alcohol, Drugs & All in Between." The program will feature a panel of young adults who will share alcohol and drug-use experiences with the audience. It will be held at Atholton High School, 6520 Freetown Road, in Columbia. It is open to teens and parents.
The second program, a workshop, will be held Oct. 16, 7-8:30 p.m. at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Lane, Columbia.
Titled "Whose Homework Is It Anyway? Promoting Academic Self-Reliance During the Teen Years," this program will feature guest speaker Brad Sachs, author of "The Good Enough Child" and "The Good Enough Teen," who will discuss teen responsibility, independence and academic achievement. The workshop will be for parents only.

* Dunloggin Middle School in Ellicott City is selling engraved bricks to commemorate its 35-year anniversary.
The bricks are $35 and can have up to three lines, with 14 characters per line. They will be planted in the flagpole area in front of the school. Proceeds will go toward new choral risers and replacement desks.

* THRIVE announces the L.E.A.N. (Lifestyle, Education, Activity, and Nutrition) program to help kids make better choices to live healthier lifestyles.
The program comprises eight weeks of highly participatory seminars taught by medical, nutritional, and fitness experts. Each session is 90 minutes. The program begins Oct. 1 and runs each Wednesday through Nov. 19.
The cost is $495 per family for the eight-week program.
Sessions are held at the THRIVE offices, 30 Corporate Center, 10440 Little Patuxent Pkwy., Suite 530, Columbia.

* Elkridge Elementary School PTA Yard Sale will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8 a.m.-noon. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 28. $20 for two parking spaces. Tables are not provided. PTA-sponsored book and bake table also available.

* St. John's Parish Day School in Ellicott City will host several open houses for parents of lower-school students (grades kindergarten to 5). During these open houses, parents can tour the school and get additional information about the programs offered to potential students.
