West Friendship Elementary School celebrated Constitution Day, Sept. 17, during a school-wide assembly held beside the school's flag pole. Principal Corita Oduyoye talked with the students about the Constitution and then led them in a recitation of the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence.

Students in kindergarten and first grade sang "I Love My Country." Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders sang "This is America." The assembly concluded with the entire school singing "This Land Is Your Land."

The focus of the school day was around the Constitution, Oduyoye said. "They learn of the wonderful freedoms we have in this county," she said.

Pictured at the assembly is Andrew Gula, a student in Linda Chrest's first-grade class, peering out from behind a flag he made earlier in the day.

Constitution Day was signed into law by President George W. Bush Dec. 8, 2004, and is celebrated by educational institutions nationwide. The theme of this year's Constitution Day was a dedication to all those who are serving in the military.
