Lisbon Elementary School hosted an art show Oct. 2, in honor of art teacher Shawn Costello, and Jing-Jy Chen, the school's artist in residence from Taiwan. The show featured displays of all the artwork students from grades kindergarten through fifth grade had worked on.

Every piece of artwork had been taught with the art of Chinese brush painting. Beautiful lanterns, fans and drawings adorned the hallways. Chen worked with Lisbon Elementary for two weeks. A number of Chen's works were available for purchase.

Chen moved from Taiwan in 1967 to America. She attended the University of Rochester in New York and studied education. She found the love of art and started working on drawing animals and wildlife using Chinese art. She has now traveled to several different schools within Howard County and lives in Laurel.

Her most recent showing was at the Artists' Gallery in Columbia in September where she displayed her Oriental Brush Works, "The Delights of Nature."

In a collaborative project, students learned to use chopsticks and also were taught by media specialist Stephanie Hastings a unit on Chinese folktales. Jodi O'Connor, a G/T resource teacher, also worked with third graders on Haiku poetry.

The Artist in Residency program was funded by the school's Parent Teacher Association.
