How well do you know your fruits and vegetables?
"What has eyes, but cannot see?" Bryant Woods Elementary School first-grader Darryl Brown asked his classmates at an assembly last week.
The answer: a potato.
Over the past year, students at the school have gotten to know their fruits and vegetables very well, thanks to the Color Gardens Quilt project, a PTA-sponsored art project consisting of the construction of three quilts depicting the students' favorite fruits and veggies.
The Nov. 21 assembly was the project's culminating celebration, as well as a chance to recognize the efforts of various staff members, parents and volunteers, Principal Sean Martin said.
With artistic direction from art teacher Susan Harvey, the students drew pictures of fruits and vegetables that were sent to a company that transfers the drawings onto fabric quilt squares. Parents and other volunteers helped sew the quilts together over the summer, according to Mary Schwanky, a PTA member and grandmother of two students at the Columbia school.
The quilts are hanging in the school's cafeteria.
"It would be encouraging them to eat better," Harvey said of the display. "They see their creativity, their work in their environment."
