St. Vincent Pallotti High School claimed victory in its second match-up against Laurel High School in "Laurel Jeopardy."

The only two high schools to sit in Laurel city limits faced off on Nov. 18 in a trivia battle to determine school's students knew more about the city of Laurel, with the Pallotti Panthers prevailing, 79-43.

"I probably won't be running up and down Main Street hoisting the trophy, but it's certainly a fun, healthy competition between our schools," said Pallotti Principal Steve Edmonds. "It's good to have an arena of competition between us other than just in sports."

Each school was represented by a six-player team. The teams were given 30 seconds to answer a question, with five points awarded for correct answers.

If, however, a team could not answer the question, its opponent could try and would receive three points for a correct answer.

All the answers to the questions could be found on the city's Web site with questions ranging from the term length of Laurel officials to where residents could go for city services.

This was the second match-up between the two schools. The last trivia challenge was four years ago, with Laurel High walking away the victors.

The Prince George's County Board of Education announced that it will close county schools and school offices for Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.

"This date will be of great historical significance in that the first African American President of the United States of America will be inaugurated," said school board Chair Verjeana Jacobs. "The board wanted ... students to be able to be a part of history rather than simply reading about it."

The school board voted unanimously in favor of the measure during a System Oversight meeting, which also featured the swearing-in of newly elected at-large board member Amber Waller.

The closure of schools for Inauguration Day will not require the school year to be lengthened.

Bond Mill Elementary will hold its annual Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 8:15 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. at the school.

Scotchtown Hills Elementary School will also hold a Winter Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at the school.
