New contract for superintendent > The Board of Education of Howard County unanimously approved a resolution to enter into a new four-year contract with Superintendent Sydney Cousin. The new contract is effective July 1 and is subject to the approval of the State Superintendent of Schools, Nancy Grasmick. Cousin's new contract provides for a base salary of $265,000 -- an increase of $33,537 -- over his current salary of $231,463. Dr. Cousin's leadership, the school system has remained the top performing system in Maryland and has made significant progress in improving the academic achievement of all student groups as measure by standardized and informal testing. Additionally, the system has upgraded technology and provided computers for all teachers, implemented full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools and trained staff in cultural proficiency. In response to concerns with aging schools, Cousin launched a comprehensive assessment of all facilities that, when completed, will serve as the basis for determining capital needs and prioritizing modernization projects.

The University of Connecticut announced Richard Veilleux has been placed on the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester.
Melvian Richburg, majoring in the criminal justice administration program, has been named to the Central Pennsylvania College dean's list for the 2008 winter term.
Amy Ruppel and Jaclyn Leaf have been awarded scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year from the Ellicott City Volunteer Firmness' Association, Inc.
Kristen Shepherd, graduated from Wake Forest University, Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, She was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a leadership honor society, Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society and Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society. In addition, Kristen was selected by the U.S. Department of State and the Spanish government to receive a Fulbright Scholarship and will be working and researching in Madrid, Spain during 2008-09.
Thomas Long, a graduate from Johns Hopkins, 2008, has received the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Undergraduate Research Award for demonstrated contributions to research in chemical and Biomolecular engineering.
For Kids and Teens
Baseball at community center> Wear your favorite sports jersey and ball cap to watch television and root, root, root for the home team -- Orioles -- at the Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, June 28 from 7- 9 p.m., as the Orioles take on the Washington Nationals. There will be a variety of crafts to make and take home. Concessions will be provided, such as hot pretzels, popcorn and nachos. All ages, cost is $3 person. Testing workshop for parents> The Testing, Testing Workshop for parents of students who don't test well will meet August 6 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Centennial High School, 4300 Centennial Lane. Parents will learn the most effective strategies to help, resulting in more independence and higher performance for students on both classroom and standardized tests. The fee is $85 and the second parent is free.

Goodbye, Mr. Wilson> Rick Wilson will be leaving Glenwood Middle School, after five years as principal, and moving on to become the principal of Folly Quarter Middle School.

Carl Perkins, assistant principal at Folly Quarter Middle School, will become the principal of Centennial High School starting the 2008-09 school year, replacing Scott Pfeifer.

Mt. Hebron
Top Viking to leave Mt. Hebron> Dave Brown, principal of Mt. Hebron High School, will be leaving Mt. Hebron the end of the 2007-08 school year to take over as principal of Glenwood Middle School. Scott Ruehl, school system coordinator of secondary mathematics, will be replacing Brown as principal of Mt. Hebron.
