Howard County's Department of Public Works plans to begin work on 52-year-old water mains in Elkridge next week and will direct traffic near the project to alternate routes.

Crews will begin replacing corroded sections of water mains at Montgomery Road and Lawyers Hill Road on or about Aug. 21. The county has budgeted roughly $2 million for the project, which will replace 20 inches of the mains, said Lisa Brightwell, a customer service representative for the public works department.

The construction will divert most traffic from Lawyers Hill Road, between Montgomery Road and Summer Home Terrace, to Route 1. The road will remain open to local, official, emergency and school bus traffic.

The project should be completed by mid-September.
