A former U.S. Postal Service letter carrier from the Lisbon post office was sentenced to 18 months in prison Sept. 3 in Howard County Circuit Court for stealing $14,776 in U.S. Treasury checks between July and November 2007.

Deirdre Grace, 47, of North Laurel, pleaded guilty to a single count of a felony theft scheme over $500 and was sentenced by Judge Diane Leasure to five years in prison with all but 18 months suspended, according to court documents.

Grace pleaded guilty to stealing 12 U.S. Treasury checks that included Social Security and workman's compensation checks to residents in Cooksville, according to court records.

A spokeswoman with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General said Grace is no longer employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

Janette DeBoissiere, Grace's attorney, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
