The Atholton Raiders were singing a song of relief Friday night at Centennial while hurrying to their bus under intense rain, thunder and lightning. The 2007 playoff qualifiers won their first game of the 2008 season with a 20-19 win over the Eagles after an 0-3 start.
"We knew this was a big week, because 0-3 is not good," said senior defensive end Ross Durham, who blocked an extra point in the second quarter.
Durham was also in on a key tackle in the fourth quarter to keep Centennial (1-3) out of the end zone on a fourth-and-1 from the 2-yard line. The Raiders needed three big stops on that goal-line stand as the Eagles started the fourth quarter on the Raiders' 6 after a long kickoff return by Preston Schryer.
"We knew we had to step up. That was a huge play in the game. (If) we don't make that play, we probably don't have the (win)," said Durham, who gave credit to teammate Wesley King, a junior making his first start.
After that stop, Nick Aloi rushed three straight times for gains of 19, 11 and 18 yards. Then Jake Stull ran twice for 13 and 12 yards to put the ball on the Centennial 25-yard line. The Eagles regrouped after a time out and stopped the Raiders, forcing Atholton into a turnover on downs, but Centennial was not able to carry over the momentum in its final offensive drive.
"We got our No. 1 (win). That's what we needed. We needed a win because we were slipping -- 0-4 wouldn't be good. We wouldn't be able to get out of that hole, I didn't think," Atholton coach Chuck Fales said. "After the third (loss), our morale was in the gutter."
Stull (132 yards rushing, one touchdown) and Aloi (69 yards) led the Raiders in rushing and quarterback Kalvin Seamonson threw a touchdown pass to Matt Robinson and ran one in himself. Tom Hart made leaping catches on two of Seamonson's five passes for gains of 33 and 30 yards.
Kyle Young ran for 87 yards and two scores while sophomore Bray Benning rushed for 86 yards on 16 carries. Eric Suydam threw a 9-yard TD pass to Marcos Ocadiz.
In other county games this week, Howard (2-1) travels to Oakland Mills (1-2), Long Reach (1-2) hosts Reservoir (2-1) and in a battle of unbeatens, Marriotts Ridge (3-0) takes on Wlide Lake (3-0). All games have a 2 p.m. kickoff.
FRIDAY NIGHT ROUNDUPRIVER HILL 63, MT. HEBRON 0The Hawks continued to roll through the county unbeaten, winning its fourth game of the year and 18th straight overall in dominating Mt. Hebron.
Michael Camapanro scored three touchdowns and the defense scored twice on blocked kicks as River Hill (4-0) used a 35-point second quarter to put the game out of reach for Mt. Hebron (1-3). The Hawks have outscored their opponents, 214-15, this season and earned their second shutout. Campanaro now has 13 TDs in four games.
Campanaro's first touchdown came on a 7-yard pass from Luke Hostetler in the first quarter to put River Hill ahead, 7-0. In the second quarter, Campanaro scored on runs of 5 and 23 yards and the defense recovered a fumble and a blocked punt for scores to help give River Hill a 42-0 lead at halftime.
