A 22-year-old Columbia man pleaded guilty in Howard County Circuit Court Sept. 30 to first-degree assault for stabbing his father in his Columbia home in April.

Timothy Forrest Cavender, of 12290 Green Meadow Drive, pleaded guilty before Judge Richard Bernhardt, according to Wayne Kirwan, a spokesman for Howard County State's Attorney Dario Broccolino.

Police were called to Cavender's Hickory Ridge home on April 12 where they found Cavender's father, Peter Cavender, bleeding profusely from the neck, according to a statement of facts in the case.

Timothy Cavender and his father had been drinking and arguing throughout the night, according to the statement of facts. At one point, his father pushed him, at which point Timothy stabbed his father in the neck, according to the statement of facts.

Peter Cavender was transported to The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, treated and released.

Timothy Cavender is being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center. He faces between three and eight years in prison for the crime when he is sentenced Dec. 12, according to Kirwan.
