Howard County police charged a 22-year-old Jessup man yesterday in the September shooting death of a Jessup teenager.
Kenneth Ryan Bowser, of the 8100 block of Sheffield Court, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment in the death of Michael Joseph Mullinax, 17, police said.
On Sept. 10, police, responding to a report of a gunshot at Bowser’s home, found Mullinax dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
Detectives believe Mullinax was visiting Bowser at his home and the two were alone in Bowser’s basement at the time of the shooting, police said.
Bowser and Mullinax were playing with the gun before it went off, according to charging documents. Mullinax picked it up, Bowser tried to grab it from him and when the two began wrestling over it, the gun went off, according to charging documents.
Bowser told police he had had three glasses of alcohol before the shooting and that Mullinax had pointed the gun at him “just to play,” before Bowser tried to take it from him.
Bowser was being held today at the Howard County Detention Center, according to Wayne Kirwan, a spokesman for the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office.
