A Howard County Circuit Court judge sentenced a former Baltimore man to five years in prison Nov. 14 for stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend numerous times in a Columbia apartment.
Judge Lenore Gelfman sentenced Kazeem Akinniyi, 26, following Akinniyi’s August conviction on second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges, according to Wayne Kirwan, a spokesman for the Howard County state’s attorney.
During the August trial, prosecutors argued that Akinniyi broke into the Wilde Lake apartment of Sharon Johnson, his former girlfriend, on Dec. 27, 2007, and attacked her boyfriend, Jefferson Bolden, with a knife while the couple were in bed.
After wounding Bolden numerous times, prosecutors said, Akinniyi jumped out of a window in the third-floor apartment and broke both his legs.
Akinniyi’s attorney argued that the two men had brawled and the stabbing was in self-defense.
The jury acquitted Akinniyi of more serious charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.
Also on Nov. 14, Assistant State's Attorney Michael Weal dropped charges against Akinniyi stemming from another break-in at his estranged girlfriend’s apartment in September 2007.
