Howard County had the highest voter turnout in the state on Election Day on Nov. 4, according to figures released last week by the Maryland State Board of Elections.

Of the county's 175,115 registered voters, 83.3 percent cast ballots on Election Day, putting it ahead of all other Maryland counties, according to a county news release. The state average was 76.4 percent.

"Not only did we have the highest turnout percentage in the state, but all those people who voted were incredibly patient and pleasant throughout that busy day," Betty Nordaas, director of Howard's Board of Elections, said in a statement.

The county typically draws in 80 to 82 percent of voters in a presidential election.
