The Columbia Association has hired Versar Inc., of Springfield, Va., to work on a plan to improve the quality of Columbia’s water.
The consulting firm will design and implement a watershed restoration plan for Columbia that would improve the quality of water in the planned community’s streams and lakes, according to CA officials.
Stormwater runoff has become an environmental problem in Columbia because it carries sediment into local streams, ponds and lakes that smothers the natural habitat and clouds the water, according to CA officials.
In December 2007, the 10-member CA board of directors approved spending $250,000 to hire a watershed consultant to help evaluate the condition of existing soil, topography, uses of land and stormwater management systems in Columbia.
Versar will begin investigating Columbia’s watershed this month, CA officials said.
