John V. Kiesler
John Valentine Kiesler, of Columbia, died July 26, 2008, of complications stemming from diabetes, at Lorien Nursing Home. He was 75.
Born Aug. 3, 1932, in Louisville, Ky., to John and Mildred Kiesler, he graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School in Louisville.
In 1955, he graduated from Bellarmine University, in Louisville, with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Then in 1962, he earned a Master of Education in psychological testing from Butler University, in Indiana.
He married Carol Stratman in 1960.
Mr. Kiesler worked as a personnel management specialist for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore for more than 30 years, prior to retiring in 1999.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, in Columbia.
Family members recall that Mr. Kiesler, an avid walker, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was a fan of the Notre Dame football team. In addition, he enjoyed reading railroad history and taking trips on old trains to the west through Washington, California and Oregon.
He was predeceased by a brother, Don Kiesler.
In addition to is wife of 48 years, Carol Kiesler, Mr. Kiesler is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and Larry Schlotterbeck, of Falling Waters, W. Va., and Christine Kiesler, of Mamaroneck, N.Y.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack and Kelley Kiesler, of Crofton, and Paul Kiesler, of Moscow, Russia; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Thomas Kiesler and Gina Peltier Kiesler, of Rockville, and Michael and Barbara Kiesler, of St. Louis; and three grandchildren, Lauren Kiesler, Ryan Kiesler and Christine Duncan.
Funeral services were held Aug. 4, 2008, at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Columbia. The Rev. Richard Tillman presided.
Interment followed at Columbia Memorial Park.
