Stanley J. Janaites

Stanley J. Janaites, of Cooksville, died Aug. 5, 2008, of natural causes at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. He was 79.

Born May 16, 1929, in New Britain, Conn., to Stanley J. and Teresa Grippo Janaites, he graduated from high school in Connecticut.

In 1955, he was ordained into the priesthood.

The Rev. Janaites served as a chaplain for Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville from 1978 to 2004. While chaplain, he filled in for other priests at many local parishes, including St. Joseph Catholic Community, in Eldersburg; St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, in Woodstock; and St. Michael's Catholic Church, in Poplar Springs.

He enjoyed writing poetry as well as playing the piano as a form of entertainment for others. Rev. Janaites is remembered for his constant willingness to help those in need.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothea O'Gara.

The Rev. Janaites is survived by a longtime friend, Leona Blumenfeld, of Sykesville.

A prayer vigil was held Aug. 7, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Eldersburg.

A funeral liturgy followed on Aug. 8, 2008 at St. Joseph's.

A graveside committal service also followed on Aug. 8 at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.
