David W. Fitzpatrick
David William Fitzpatrick, of Ellicott City, formerly of Waterbury, Conn., died Aug. 4, 2008, of complications from strokes and kidney disease, at Howard County General Hospital. He was 67.
Born Nov. 3, 1940, in Waterbury, to Raymond J. Sr. and Elizabeth Sheehan Fitzpatrick, he graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury in 1958.
In 1962, he graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in French.
He married Peggy Sink in 1963.
Mr. Fitzpatrick worked as a cryptanalyst and taught cryptanalysis for the National Security Agency for 34 years. He retired in 1997.
Family members recall that he was an avid sports fan, especially the Redskins and the Orioles. He assisted with the Centennial Fun Run for more then 20 years.
He also enjoyed doing puzzles, including crossword double crostics and cryptograms, as well as watching game shows involving words and trivia.
He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond J. Sr. and Elizabeth Sheehan Fitzpatrick; and a brother, Raymond J. Fitzpatrick Jr.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Peggy Fitzpatrick, Mr. Fitzpatrick is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Laura and Keith Overstreet, of Traverse City, Mich.; two grandsons, Jack Overstreet and Rob Overstreet, both of Traverse City; three nieces; and four nephews.
Funeral services were held Aug. 9, 2008, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Glenwood. The Rev. Mary Jane Ledgerwood presided.
Interment followed privately at St. John's Cemetery in Ellicott City.
