James G. Brown

James Gerard Brown, of Finksburg, formerly of Clarksville, died Aug. 21, 2008, during heart surgery, at St. Joseph Hospital, in Towson. He was 72.

Born Nov. 29, 1935, in Washington, D.C., to Clement R. and Elizabeth Mattimore Brown, he graduated from St. Charles Seminary in Catonsville in 1953.

In 1958, he graduated from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. During his time there, he also studied psychology.

In addition, he attended St. Mary's lower seminary for three years, where he studied theology, pastoral counseling and canon law.

He married Anne Carney in 1972.

Mr. Brown was employed as a prison counselor for the Maryland Department of Corrections for 25 years, before retiring in 1991.

He also instructed computer education classes for kindergarten through eighth grades for six years at St. John Catholic School in Westminster.

In addition, he worked part-time for a year in 1993 for Carroll County Public Schools' Alternative Education Program as a computer supervisor for adults.

Mr. Brown was a member of MICCA, an organization for educators that incorporates technology. He gave two presentations for the organization's conventions.

Family members recall that he was a man of strong faith, who attended St. Louis Church, in Clarksville.

Mr. Brown, who was a member of the Knights of Columbus Councils 1393 and 7612, enjoyed camping and gardening.

He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Clement R. Brown II.

In addition to his wife of 36 years, Anne Carney Brown, Mr. Brown is survived by two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Paul B. and Dorothy "Dottie" Brown, of Seaside Park, N.J., and Michael A. and Diane Brown, of Columbia; close friends Darrell, Janet, Christy and Scott Tenney, of Finksburg; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 25, 2008, at St. John Roman Catholic Church, in Westminster. The Rev. Arthur Valenzano officiated.

Interment followed at St. Louis Church Cemetery, in Clarksville.
