With regard to the Wegmans article that was on page 1 of the Aug. 7, 2008 issue of the Flier, I have the following comments:

I am glad that the county has rejected both claims against Wegmans grocery store. As in the past, the infamous Columbia motto, "not in my backyard" once again has reared its ugly head. Fortunately, this time it was smacked down judiciously.

What a ludicrous claim that a grocery store would disrupt the Saturday traffic in the area. Do the three plaintiffs know that the Wegmans is in a commercial area?

Being the president of the local grocery store union, the real reason Mr. May is fighting Wegmans is because it is a non-union store.

Bringing business to the Columbia area is good. It will provide jobs and economic growth for the community.

Exactly right. Unions never want their workers to have to compete with non-unionized workers. And that is a disservice to consumers.

The thing that scares me most is that the biggest union in Howard County is the teachers' union, which affects the quality of our education system and it has a large amount of political influence.

The teachers' union is the biggest opponent of school vouchers, which would make public schools compete on a level playing field with private schools. Whose interests are best served by the union's opposition to school vouchers? You can bet that it is not the interest of the students or parents.
