The deadline for submitting sports copy is noon on Mondays. We prefer e-mail (howardcountysports@patuxent.com) or fax (410-997-4564). We do not accept results by phone. When two Howard County teams play, players from both teams (first and last names) must be mentioned in the write-up. Questions? Call 410-730-3990, Ext. 1282.

Tennis

Maryland State Junior Team Championships

The Howard County Recreation and Parks Junior Tennis teams, the Awesome Aces, competed in the Maryland State Junior Team Tennis Championships July 11-12 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Junior team tennis consists of a minimum of three girls and three boys. Teams play five matches (two singles and three doubles).

The 8-U/intermediate, 10-U/intermediate and 12-U/intermediate teams each won state championships. The 12-U team advances to the mid-Atlantic Section JTT tournament in Fredericksburg, Va. Aug. 9-10.

The 8-U team defeated a team from St. Mary's to win its title. Team members are Ananya Devadiga, Camila Cavero, Yash Shah, Zachary Doubleday, John Freed, William McIntyre and Nikhil Nair.

The 10-U team of Diana Budman, Rebecca Mathew, Michelle Xu, William Schulden III-Dutch, Diego Cavero, Kevin Li, Mathew Aylaian and John McIntyre defeated Frederick County to win the title.

The 12-U team won its championship by beating Charles County, 5-0. The team members are Victoria Kogan, Serene Mathew, Nadia Gizdova, Ian Siew, Dylan Kapoor, Farhan Bader and William Vea.

The 14-U/intermediate team of Sohail Samet, Arjun Sutha, Vishai Balinini and Hannah Mathew placed third in the competition.

The 18-U/intermediate team of Akshay Kolluri, Ravi Vaswani, Youssef Elnabawi, Rohini Bhatia, Melissa Le and Jasmine Samet won the consolation round against Frederick County.

Softball

HCYP Patriots

The Howard County Youth Program Patriots Blue 16-U girls fast pitch travel team won the Summerfest at Love Point Tournament, in Stevensville.

In the opening game, a 1-0 victory over Champions Blue, Kat Correa drove home the lone run and Lillie Happel struck out 12. Taking advantage of nine Mt. Vernon walks as well as RBIs by Amanda Harrison, Cara Koontz and Shayna Popkin, the Patriots Blue beat a scrappy Mt. Vernon (Va.) Magic team 7-6 in the second game.

The Patriots reeled off three straight 10-0 victories in their next three games.

Cara Woods went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single and drove home three runs against the Takoma Fire.

Jen Folger went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double and four RBIs and Kelsey McKown reached base three times, scoring twice, in a rematch with the Mt. Vernon Magic in game four.

Game give featured a shutout by Sara Thacker, who also recorded six strikeouts, as well as three RBIs each from Katie McCarthy and Happel.

Reflecting the success of the HCYP organization, the championship game featured a matchup of the two HCYP Patriots 16-U teams, the Patriots Blue and the Patriots Red, both sporting perfect 5-0 records.

After giving up two first-inning runs, the Patriots Blue won the game, 5-2. This is the second tournament win for the team, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation out of 700 registered B teams. Patriots Blue has a 29-8-1 record and a .793 winning percentage.

Golf

Turf Valley Women

The heat didn't deter some of the women in the Turf Valley 18-Hole Group July 17. A frequent winner, Ok Sun Kim, again took A1 low gross/net honors (89/80) on the medal play day and Sue Song excelled with her putting (31). Newcomer Chris Windesheim was A2's low gross winner (98). Janice Jennings won low net (73) and tied Ginger Swisher for low putts (32).

Mary Jeanne Farley was B1's low gross/net winner and Agnes Thiem tied Arlene Young for low putts (34). B2 player Betty Robinson won low gross (104) and low putts (33). Rapidly improving Kathy Sappington won low net (67).

Running

Howard County Striders

Mike Dusenbery and Karsten Brown maintained long leads as overall winners at the Howard County Striders Summer Series race at Jeffers Hill July 16.
