Two Howard County members of the class of 2008 have been selected as outstanding student volunteers for Special Olympics Howard County, and each will receive a one-time scholarship of $1, 500.

Wilde Lake High School graduate Stephen Schnorf is the recipient of the 2008 Jackie Burk Memorial Award for the Outstanding Student Volunteer for Special Olympics Howard County.

Schnorf has volunteered in track and field, bowling, cross-country and aquatics as well as at state games. In the aquatics program, he has served as both a coach and a member of the Unified Swim Team.

Schnorf will be a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point this fall.

The Burk family is funding this annual scholarship through memorial donations received to honor their daughter, Jackie, who was also a student volunteer for Special Olympics and very committed to the program.

Megan Norman, a graduate of River Hill High School, has been selected for the Allan Homes Award for an Outstanding Student Volunteer for 2008.

Norman has been an aquatics volunteer since 2006. In addition to coaching, she is a member of the Unified Relay Team. She will attend Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, in the fall.

This award was set up through the generosity of Allan Waschak, management team member and aquatics coordinator, who funded an endowment from which Special Olympics Howard County outstanding student volunteers can be honored.

Each year, Special Olympics Howard County recognizes outstanding student volunteers by awarding college scholarships. Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
