Swimming

The Hammond Park Stingrays did well in the Central Maryland Swim League Division III meet, at Hammond Park, and the Straehle Individual Championships to round out the 2008 season.

Hans Wicklein was a triple winner in the Division III meet and placed third in the Straehle backstroke, the best of any Stingray swimmer.

Robert Barrett and Nathan Brocenos each had a first-, second- and third-place finish at divisionals, while Eric Higgins had a first and two thirds. Eric Scholz had a first-, second- and fourth-place finish and Lance Taweel had a first, third and fourth. Liz Pflaum and Kyle Saunderson each had one second- and two third-place finishes.

Awards were given for the top eight places at the Divisional meet.

At the Straehle Meet, Hammond Park's 11-12 boys and 13-14 boys free relay teams both placed fifth. Drew Rutten placed ninth in the boys 9-10 freestyle; and Wicklein had an eighth-place in the boys 11-12 freestyle.

Roger Carter

The Roger Carter Seals sent 16 swimmers to the Princemont All Stars meet Aug. 2. The meet is a competition of the leagues top swimmers and was held at the Belair Swim and Racquet Club, in Bowie.

Swimmers had to place first in their event at their divisional meets the week before or have a top time in the league to qualify.

Angela Zhu placed first in her backstroke and freestyle races. Derek Nguyen, Tien Doan, Daniel Gao and Angela Zhu also placed first in their 8-and-under mixed relay with a time of 1:14.78.

The following Seals qualified for All Stars: Tien Doan, Elizabeth Gilbert, Shannon Hochkeppel, Anna Li, Helen Wang, Angela Zhu, Chris Ek, Daniel Gao, Jeffery Hao, Kevin Hu, Andrew Li, Alex Lo, Derek Nguyen and Jeffery Tse.
