Vince Testerman ran for two touchdowns and Kyle Williams caught two of Tim Blair's three touchdown passes as Marriotts Ridge (3-0) defeated Reservoir, 38-6, Friday night in Marriottsville. It was the first time Reservoir (2-1) has been scored on this season.
"They had a good D, they were real physical," Williams said. "Our (offensive) line played real well against (them), Tim Willman (Reservoir's 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman) is huge. They played real well against him."
After Reservoir's David Wilson ran for a touchdown with 4:35 left in the second quarter, the Gators stopped the Mustangs on their next drive for a chance to cut the lead to less than a score going into halftime. But on the first play of their drive, the Gators fumbled while trying to run a counter play and Marriotts Ridge's Aaron Dunn recovered, setting up a two-play touchdown drive with 30 seconds left in the half to break the game wide open.
"Right then we knew we had to punch it in and get some momentum going into halftime," said Williams, who caught a 13-yard pass (plus a late hit penalty) to set up Testerman's second touchdown run.
The win allowed Marriotts Ridge to remain one of three unbeaten teams in the county, joining defending county champion River Hill and Wilde Lake. The Mustangs travel to Wilde Lake Saturday, Sept. 27 for a 2 p.m. contest with the Wildecats. Reservoir will try to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Long Reach, also for a 2 p.m. game.
Other scores Friday night from around the county: River Hill 55, Centennial 0; Wilde Lake 38, Glenelg 35; Howard 37, Long Reach 8; and Mt. Hebron 28, Atholton 21. Hammond (0-2) hosts Oakland Mills (0-2) today at noon to round out the week's county high school football action.
HOWARD 37, LONG REACH 8
Howard (2-1) beat Long Reach (1-2) for the first time in school history, 37-8, after leading, 31-0, at halftime.
"Our offense kept the ball on the field the entire game," coach Bruce Strunk said. "They didn't have the ball enough to do anything."
Mark Covington rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.
MT. HEBRON 28, ATHOLTON 21
The Vikings climbed out of the county cellar by upsetting reeling Atholton.
Mt.
Hebron (1-2) fell behind, 21-0, at Atholton (0-3), but scored 28
unanswered points to win its first game of 2008. The win was also the first at Mt. Hebron for new coach Ross Hannon. Mt. Hebron's last on-field win came
in 2006; the Vikings' lone win in 2007 came after a forfeir for an ineligible player
violation.
Brody Tennant scored the winning touchdown on an 80-yard run
with just over six minutes left in the game. Tennant, who rushed for 97
yards total, intercepted a pass in the first quarter and recovered a
fumble in the third. Vikings quarterback Clint Huber (12-for-24, 128
yards) threw touchdown passes of 13- and 9-yards to Mike McCarthy, and a 22-yard scoring strike to Spencer Wilkins.
WILDE LAKE 38, GLENELG 35
Glenelg's Colin Osbourne scored on a 95-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, but Wilde Lake (3-0) held on to win 38-35 Friday night
at Glenelg (1-2). Danny March made an interception for a touchback with
19 seconds left to secure the win. March's teammate, Jerrel Epps, had
two interceptions, one returned 75 yards for the first touchdown of the
game. March led the 'Cats with 155 yards rushing on 13 carries and two
touchdowns. Epps and Christian Hough also scored rushing touchdowns for
Wilde Lake.
Glenelg's Shannon Maura scored three touchdowns, each
one from three yards out, and Glenelg quarterback Gage Trawick threw an
11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Brittain. Both kickers -- Wilde Lake's
Graham Spicer and Glenelg's A.J. Rosenthal -- were a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points, and Spicer also kicked a 27-yard field goal to open the scoring.
RIVER HILL 55, CENTENNIAL 0
Michael Campanaro and Malek Redd both rushed for three touchdowns as the Hawks ran away from the Eagles, earning their 17th straight victory.
Redd scored two of his three touchdowns (runs of 55 and 29 yards) as the Hawks built a 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. Camapanaro scored on rushes of 40 and 31 yards in the second quarter as River Hill put the game out of reach, leading 35-0 at halftime.
