Soccer

Columbia Soccer Club travel

The Columbia Soccer Club Storm Runners (U-13 girls) defeated the Mount Airy Breeze, 3-0, to go 2-0 in Baltimore Beltway Soccer League play. The Storm Runners goal scorers were Julie Delmont, Christina Kochanski and Imani Lipscomb.

Delmont's first half goal was a beautiful shot from the top of the box. The goal was set up by a quick throw-in by Lipscomb after the Storm Runners had moved the ball up the field via a through ball from midfielder Megan Blodgett.

Kochanski's second-half goal was another shot from the top of the box.

The Storm Runners finished the scoring when Lipscomb put a rebound into an empty net after a shot from Delmont was deflected off the Breeze goalie.

The Storm Runners defense was led by goalkeeper Katherine MacKie and defenders Erica Noppinger, Becca Riley, Vivian Yang and Gabbie Stegall. They girls kept a strong Breeze attack at bay the entire game.

The midfielders, led by McKenzie Rynn, Jenny Haynes, Kochanski and Emily Powers, kept the pressure on the Breeze by sending penetrating passes to the front line.

Soccer Association of Columbia travel

SAC United Premier (U-12 NCSL Division 1 boys) defeated Montgomery Soccer Club's Magic Green, 4-3. SAC set the tone of the game early on when Mike Heitzmann sent a cross from the right wing to Chad Strothers, who scored. Center midfielder Danny Kaiser followed soon after with a second goal.

MSC Green responded with their first goal and the half ended, 2-1. SAC extended its lead to 4-1 when Jacob Fenicle and Kaiser scored.

MSC scored twice to pull within a goal, solid defensive play by Derek Farley, Noah Fu and James Donkor helped SAC get its second win of the season.

Golf

Turf Valley Women

Turf Valley Women's 18-Hole Group's championship was held Sept. 18. The new league champion is Tae Kang, who shot a 258 for 72 holes. The runner-up was Kim Hale (283). The other winners were:

First flight: Helen Griffin (275); runner-up: Jung Choi (286).

Second flight: Cindy Starnes (289); runner-up Janice Jennings (304).

Third flight: Deb Ford (311); runner-up Loretta Greer (320).

Football

Howard County Terps

The Howard County Terps 9-11 National team rolled to its fourth victory of the season by shutting out the Winfield Cavaliers, 28-0, Sept. 20.

Jerad Washington started the scoring with an exciting 49-yard touchdown run. Justin Ballmer kicked the extra point.

After an interception by Nate Racks, the Terps scored on a two-yard run by Evan Russell. Ballmer added the extra point.

When the Terps' relentless defense, led by Grant McMullan, Matt Marsh and Jesse Ketchum, forced the Cavaliers to punt, Racks grabbed the ball and rumbled 34 yards for the score.

Larry Aaron, Corey Sexton, Aaron Hurd and Christion Oliphant buried Cavalier defenders with crushing blocks all afternoon. Their efforts allowed Mike Cornwell to haul in a 38-yard pass to set up a 3-yard plunge by Racks for the final touchdown.

Columbia Ravens

The Columbia Ravens 7-9 Nationals improved to 4-0 after defeating the Arbutus Eagles, 16-6, in Mid-Maryland Youth Football action. Arbutus struck early with a 10-play scoring drive.

The Ravens' offense, led by Noah Thyberg, marched down the field to take the lead following a run by Brandon Bradsher and a Thyberg kick.

The Ravens scored again to open the second half on a 50-yard run by Bradsher.

Other members of the offensive unit include the offensive line of Kemi Moore, Jordan Cooper, Kyle Farrar, Kyle Fehr and Sam Wiedorfer and the backfield of Andrew O'Donnell, Austin Manriquez, Kyndle Terrell-Jones, Jayden Cowan, Thyberg, Bradsher and Myles Williams.

The Ravens' defense played tough throughout the game. Led by Thyberg, Terrell-Jones, Cowan, Fehr, Williams, Manriquez, Cooper, Wierdorfer, Kendall McFadden, Deandre Dyson, Griffin Corbett, Kris Dodson, Tyler Patron and Brian Ricketts, the Ravens held on three goal-line stances to secure the victory.

Columbia Ravens 9-11 National recorded their fourth-straight victory, shutting out the Arbutus Eagles, 40-0, on Sept. 20. Malik Davis ripped off runs of 13 and 35 yards, before giving way to Malik Holland's one-yard run for the Ravens' first score. Drew Ashley scored the extra point.

Brian Jangro hit Chase Conley on a 17-yard strike. R.J. Hobson then sprinted 16 yards to the corner for the Ravens' second score. Ashley ran in the extra point.

Jangro found Ashley for a 20-yard completion and Conley for a 25-yard bomb. Ashley then hit the corner from 16 yards out for the Ravens' third score. Holland scored the extra point.

Saul Whitaker blocked an Eagles' punt and then returned it 22 yards for the fourth score of the day. Jangro hit Walker for the extra point.

Keon Paye recovered the ensuing kickoff on the Eagles' 2-yard line, where Walker punched it in. Walker then added 35 yards on three bursts up the middle including a 2-yard plunge giving the Ravens their final score of the day.

The Ravens gained 140 yards on the ground and 62 yards in the air. The offensive line of Justin Gorham, Nick Saunders, Tyler Gormus, Jon Koh, Shane Strott, Ryan Gallagher and Austin Mitchell allowed Davis 65 yards, Walker 37 yards, Ashley and Hobson each 16 yards and Holland 6 yards.

Elkridge Hurricanes

The Elkridge Hurricanes defeated Howard County Terps 8-10 Federal, 19-6, Sept. 20. The Terps scored on their opening drive of the first quarter on a 30-yard run by Jordan Degahson. The extra point kick attempt sailed wide left. The 6-0 Terps' advantage held through the first half with the help of great tackling by Perry Comeau and Brian Barksdale of the Terps.

At the beginning of the third quarter the Terps kicked to Eric Wolfe who ran the ball 55 yards to the Terps' two-yard line. Derrick Simmons' 2-yard touchdown run to even the score at 6-6.

The Hurricanes' defense, anchored by Ryan Land (seven tackles), Wolfe (five tackles), Simmons (four tackles), shut down the Terps' running game in the second half.

Tommy Rolando scored the Hurricanes' second touchdown with a four-yard run. He also ran in the extra point, making the score, 13-6, Hurricanes.

Graham Davis booted the ensuing kickoff forcing the Terps to start form their own 20. The Terps went to their passing game, however, Rolando tipped a Terps pass attempt, brought it down and ran 20 yards for a defensive score.

The Terps did not quit. When time ran out they had the ball on the Hurricanes' 7-yard line.

Field hockey

Howard Stampede

The 7th/8th grade Howard Stampede #2 girls continued their winning way with a 4-0 win over Bel Air on the road. Stickwork and field position proved to be the difference in the game.

The front line of Hannah Clements, Madison Scepura, Natagne Van de Wall, Danielle Baker and Hannah Veater kept the ball on the Bel Air side on the field and enabled Brooke Sharbaugh, Emily Russo and Van de Wall (third of the year) to score and build a 3-0 halftime lead.

Transition passing and solid two-way play by Gilliam Lynch, Maddie Houck, Allie Duncan and Marissa Burks helped keep pressure on the Bel Air goalie and set up several offensive corners for Stampede.

The second half was much tighter with the only tally coming from Hannah Clements after a great transition from the defensive end. Maggie Clements, Ivy Meissner, Julie Rolla and Lauren McCormack put in solid efforts on defense. Sarah Bates and Nicole Rieu combined for Stampede's second-straight shutout.
