It was a goal of the Howard Community College cross country team to find quality competition this season and they found it at the Dickinson College Invitational Sept. 20. The Dragons placed 20th out of 25 teams at the meet.
The Dickinson meet is conducted in an 8k/4k format where only the top three finishers score.
Brian Allen led HCC, running the course in 28:06, and placing 64th. He was followed by Mark Kauffman (92. 28:53), Rex King (145. 30:19), Mike Janesh (156, 31:29), Tucker Failing (158. 31:39), Sean Hughes (163. 31:51) and Alfonzo Diaz-Perez (167. 32:05).

Atholton and River Hill ran in the William and Mary Invitational Sept. 20 in Williamsburg, Va..
The River Hill girls won the A race, getting strong efforts from Katie Harman (second place) and Anna Demaree (fourth). Harman's time of 18:24 was only two seconds behind the winner. The Hawks' other three runners, Kelsey Harman (22nd), Payton Lawrence (26th) and Kendall Auth (27th) all finished with times of 20:08 or better and helped the team score 81 points. The team total was 34 points better than second place W.T. Woodson.
In the boys' race, Atholton's Graham Bazell (14:58) was one of only two runners to break 15 minutes, but it wasn't quite enough to knock off Andrew Colley (14:47) of Jamestown. Still, Bazell's effort combined with that of Michael Lynch (13th) and Dylan Widger (22nd) to help set up the Raiders for a third-place finish (94 points). Matt Pacheco (38th) and Rylan King (61st) were the team's other two scorers.
River Hill boys finished fourth with 123 points. Craig Morgan (seventh in 15:30) and Sean Kirby (ninth) were the team's top two.

Football
Kyle Williams (six catches, 81 yards) caught two of Tim Blair's four touchdown passes as Marriotts Ridge (3-0) defeated Reservoir, 38-6, Sept. 19 in Marriottsville. It was the first time Reservoir (2-1) has been scored on this season.
"They had a good D, they were real physical," Williams said. "Our (offensive) line played real well against (them), Tim Willman (Reservoir's 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman) is huge. They played real well against him."
Blair (13-for-26, 197 yards) passed to Vince Testerman for a 26-yard touchdown on the game's opening drive. The Mustangs also scored on a safety in the first quarter.
After Reservoir's David Wilson ran for a touchdown with 4:35 left in the second quarter, the Gators stopped the Mustangs on their next drive for a chance to cut the lead to less than a score going into halftime. But on the first play of their drive, the Gators fumbled while trying to run a counter play and Marriotts Ridge's Aaron Dunn recovered, setting up a two-play touchdown drive with 30 seconds left in the half to break the game wide open.
"Right then we knew we had to punch it in and get some momentum going into halftime," said Williams, who caught a 13-yard pass (plus a late hit penalty) to set up a 14-yard Testerman touchdown run.
Marriotts Ridge running back Derek Coleman had 147 yards from scrimmage, and caught a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The win allowed Marriotts Ridge to remain one of three unbeaten teams in the county, joining defending county champion River Hill and Wilde Lake. The Mustangs travel to Wilde Lake Saturday, Sept. 27 for a 2 p.m. contest with the Wildecats.
Howard (2-1) beat Long Reach (1-2) for the first time in school history, 37-8, after leading, 31-0, at halftime.
A.J. Bonavitacola rushed for two touchdowns in the first half and caught a TD pass from Chris Keenan. Mark Covington rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Keenan also threw a 34-yard TD to Dionte Jones.
Kwasi Sarpong scored all eight points for the Lightning.
Mt. Hebron (1-2) fell behind, 21-0, at Atholton (0-3), but scored 28 unanswered points to win its first game of 2008. The win was also the first at Mt. Hebron for new coach Ross Hannon, who said that his first win at Centennial, where he coached in 2002 and 2003, also came after a 21-0 deficit, that time in the fourth quarter.
Mt. Hebron's last on-field win came in 2006; the Vikings' lone win in 2007 came after a forfeit for an ineligible player violation.
"It felt like you got a monkey off your back, and that thing felt like King Kong," said Hannon, who received a Gatorade shower after the game. "I'm an athlete, I got one play left in me, and that was it. I ducked most of it."
Brody Tennant scored the winning touchdown on an 80-yard run with just over six minutes left in the game. Tennant, who rushed for 97 yards total, intercepted a pass in the first quarter and recovered a fumble in the third. Jameson Zacharias also made a big interception. Vikings quarterback Clint Huber (12-for-24, 128 yards) threw touchdown passes of 13- and 9-yards to Mike McCarthy (game-high seven catches for 67 yards), and a 22-yard scoring strike to Spencer Wilkins.
The Raiders were led by Jake Stull, who rushed for 142 yards and scored two touchdowns, one of them on a 59-yard run.
Glenelg's Colin Osbourne scored on a 95-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, but Wilde Lake (3-0) held on to win 38-35 Friday night at Glenelg (1-2). Danny March made an interception for a touchback with 19 seconds left to secure victory. March's teammate, Jerrel Epps, had two interceptions, one of them returned 75 yards for the first touchdown of the game. March led the Wildecats with 155 yards rushing on 13 carries and two touchdowns. Epps and Christian Hough also scored rushing touchdowns for Wilde Lake.
Glenelg's Shannon Maura scored three touchdowns, each one from three yards out, and Glenelg quarterback Gage Trawick threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Brittain. Both kickers -- Wilde Lake's Graham Spicer and Glenelg's A.J. Rosenthal -- were a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points, and Spicer also kicked a 27-yard field goal to open the scoring.
River Hill (3-0) blanked Centennial (1-2), 55-0, for its first shut out of the season. In 2007, the Hawks had 11 total on their way to the school's first state title.
Malek Redd (201 yards) and Michael Campanaro (127) each rushed for three touchdowns and the Hawks took a 35-0 lead at halftime. Ryan Griffin led the defense with nine tackles as the Hawks held Centennial to 36 rushing yards and 69 yards of total offense.
Volleyball
Mt. Hebron is 5-1, after beating Howard and Glenelg last week. The Howard match was a five-game classic, with the Vikings taking game 5, 16-14, on a pair of rally kills.
"Both teams had good fan support and played a high level of volleyball," Mt. Hebron coach Michael Moynihan said. "The match was everything that high school sports should be."
The Vikings served 90 percent as a team. Marta Chell had four aces and six kills and was the team's emotional anchor during the tight games. Tito Aderemi-Ibitola had nine kills. Setters Megan Frey and Maddy Birus served at 100 percent and assisted five hitters on their way to more than five kills. Libero Taylor Baldwin had over 40 digs, including several on hard spikes.
Nyree Williams had 14 kills and four blocks against Mt. Hebron. Lindsey Kostkowski (11 kills), Allison Seeley (six kills, four aces) and Laura Eder (26 assists) also led the Lions.
Boys soccer
In a game that was rescheduled twice, Marriotts Ridge finally played Liberty Sept. 22 and emerged with a 4-1 victory. The Mustangs improved to 5-0 overall with the win and have now scored three or more goals in every game but one.
Liberty controlled things early, taking a 1-0 halftime lead. But Marriotts Ridge regrouped and got two goals apiece from Josh Stover and Pat Sullivan in the last 40 minutes to create the final margin. Sullivan, Phil Martinelli and Lowell Safren (two) each had assists.
Mt. Hebron remained unbeaten in county play by defeating Hammond, 4-2, Reservoir, 3-0, and Long Reach, 4-0, last week. Through four county games, the team has now scored 13 goals, which is only one goal less than it scored all of last season.
Against Hammond on Sept. 16, David Butko, Kevin Fitch, Ross Koropeckyj and Garrett Nickles all got into the scoring act. Nickles and Drew Vickers registered assists, while goalie Brian Lewis made five saves to preserve the shutout. The next day against Reservoir, Fitch, Vickers and Aidan Hoolachan accounted for the goals and Nickles and Kevin Schmidt had assists.
Atholton also remained undefeated in the county by defeating Glenelg, 3-1, to improve its record to 4-0.
Glenelg Country is off to a 4-2 start in the MIAA B Conference, splitting games with Cardinal Gibbons and Friends last week. In the game against Cardinal Gibbons, Brian Gibbons was the offensive leader with two goals and an assist, while Guneet Sodhi chipped in with the other goal. Joe Clark and Andrew Trahan also had assists.
Against Friends, though, the Dragons allowed four scores in the second half and saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
Chapelgate Christian has won two consecutive MIAA C Conference games, a 2-1 defeat of St. Johns Catholic Prep and a 4-1 victory over Baltimore Lutheran, to improve its overall record to 3-1-1.
Golf
Glenelg picked up a huge win at Fairway Hills over Atholton on Sept. 18, 86-84, to stay alive in the race for the regular season county championship. The Gladiators were 7-1 entering this week, only behind 8-0 River Hill, and will get a shot at the undefeated Hawks Sept. 29.
There were several big shots in the match against Atholton, including a 15-foot birdie putt by Glenelg's Matt Philie (24 points) on the par 3 ninth hole and a long eagle putt by Alex Taylor (24) on the fifth. Taylor actually got off to a rough start, making a triple bogey on the first hole, and coach Chris Beil said that there was obvious pressure for both teams.
"You could feel the tension off the first tee, which you'd expect with both teams only having one loss," he said. "But everyone settled down and our top three were able to pull us through."
The other member of that top three, Steven Castro, ended up scoring 24 points as well.
Atholton (6-2), meanwhile, got strong efforts from Song Lee (25 points), Morgan Hill (24) and Chris Biggins (21) to keep things tight until the final hole.
Earlier last week, Glenelg came a point away from reaching 100 when it defeated Centennial, 99-66. Castro had a birdie putt just miss on the final hole that would have helped the team reach the century mark for the first time in school history. Still Castro ended up shooting 25 points, and Taylor chipped in with 28 and Philie had 26.
River Hill stayed undefeated with a 77-69 win over Marriotts Ridge (6-2) Sept. 18. Pat Bindel led the way in the victory with 24 points and Will Swygert contributed 21. The Mustangs were led by John Kim and his 24 points.
Centennial rebounded from its loss to Glenelg by defeating Long Reach, 72-61, behind 22 points from Suyash Mehta and 21 from Braden Poe. The Lightning got a team-high 20 points from Nathan Sesto.
In other news, this year's District V tournament has been rescheduled for Oct. 3 at Fairway Hills. It had previously been slated for Oct. 6 at Eisenhower golf course in Anne Arundel County. The county championship is two days earlier, Oct. 1, at the Timbers at Troy. Both tournaments are scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m.
Girls soccer
Wilde Lake escaped from Centennial, 4-2, after scoring two goals in the last 16 minutes of play. Wilde Lake got the winning goal when Gillian Sawyer set up Faryn Watts, who put the ball in the right corner. Less than two minutes later, Bethany Keefer added an insurance goal.
Caitlin Duff and Sawyer also scored in the win.
Amanda Mathews and Jenn Simkin, who knocked in a goal off a corner kick by Annie Emery, scored for the Eagles.
"I think we competed very well for a while, but their athleticism wore us down," said Centennial coach Jack Thomas, who made "some adjustments with some temporary success, but they made it difficult for us to maintain possession long enough to build offense. The goal late in the first half by the freshman (Sawyer) was big."
That goal tied the game at 2-2.
Glenelg Country School lost two conference games. The Dragons lost to Mt. Carmel, 7-3, as Olivia Weinrub had two goals and an assist and Christina Horne one goal. Maddie Lafuse (one save) and Shayna Keller (seven) split time in the net.
Beth Tfiloh beat Glenelg Country, 2-1. Horne had the lone Dragon goal, on an assist by Weinrub. Lafuse had 13 saves.
Atholton pulled out a squeaker, 3-2, over Glenelg. Alex Collier scored twice for Glenelg.
Atholton's winning goal came from Allie Mitzner with 24 minutes left in the game. Rachel Aronchick and Amadi Phillips also scored for the Raiders.
Collier threatened several times late in the game. Atholton keeper Amy Weinberg made a huge save off a Collier shot with about 10 seconds left to play in regulation.
Hammond is winless in its first four games. The Golden Bears have scored two goals this fall. Kim Humpert, assisted by Amy Simpson, scored in a 5-1 loss to Reservoir. Cathlene Webster, assisted by Stephanie Valera, scored in a 2-1 loss to Mt. Hebron.
Katie Suntum has 14 saves and Cristina Maldonado has 34 for the season.
Mt. Hebron's goals in the win over Hammond came from Kathleen Stafford and Jess Giles. Rachel McKee had both assists.
Chapelgate lost its first league game, against Friends, 1-0, but rebounded with a 4-1 conference win over Park. All four goals in the Park contest came in the second half as Laura Lovaas, Courtney Stull and Abigail Webster (two) found the net. Susana Salvador and Kristin Ramsland (two) had assists.
Reservoir outscored Oakland Mills, 4-1, and then Mt. Hebron, 1-0, to remain unbeaten in county play.
"The Mt. Hebron game was very close and could have gone either way," said Reservoir coach Joshua Sullivan.
Kelsey Reiff got the winning goal off an assist by Lyndsey McKeown 15 minutes into the second half. Reiff now has nine goals and McKeown six assists.
Mt. Hebron had 23 shots and hit the post twice and the crossbar once, "but none found the net," said coach Tim Deppen.
Rachel McKee had a hat trick and Aileen Virella had two goals as Mt. Hebron shut out Long Reach, 7-0. Carly Weilminster and Mo O'Malley also scored. Kathleen Stafford, Clare Chatham, Morgan O'Donnell, O'Malley and Liz Trainer had assists.
"We came out flat against Mt. Hebron and had three players go down injured during the game," said Long Reach coach Joshua Webster.
Long Reach's Sam Brown scored on a penalty kick but lost to Centennial, 3-1. "The team played well and was down, 2-1, with six minutes to go," Webster said.
Amanda Mathews, Jenn Simkin and Allison Catalano scored for Centennial. Mathews and Alice Crowe had assists.
Alexandra Price, Haley Vail and Michelle Liuzzo all found the back of the net as Marriotts Ridge shut out Oakland Mills, 3-0. Catherine Chamberlain and Shelby Schoen had assists in the win.
Samantha Olson had two saves for Marriotts Ridge and Rajani Ghosh had 15 for Oakland Mills.
Field hockey
Hid Fields and Ashley Bruns each scored twice and Jenna Boarman had a single goal as Mt. Hebron defeated Hammond, 5-0. Assists came from Rachel Smith (two) and Sam Summers.
The Vikings dominated the game. Hammond only had one corner and Mt. Hebron keeper Samantha Ardinger did not touch a ball the whole game.
"We were in their circle the entire time," said Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland, pointing out that her team had 10 corners.
Hammond keeper Janice Rattigan made seven saves.
Glenelg Country School notched its first win of the season, edging Park, 2-1, in overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Glenelg Country's Alisha Spencer scored off Drew Weymer's cross.
Park tied the game three minutes later and the game eventually went to one 10-minute 7v7 sudden-victory overtime.
With 4:39 on the clock, Sam Weinstein scored on a cross from Weymer to give the Dragons the victory.
Katie Teleky (two), Tiara Ebb, Mary Beth Devitt and Emily Wikner scored and Lindsay Scheetz had two assists as Centennial defeated Howard, 5-0.
Howard's keeper Kristen McGeehan had nine saves.
Lindsay McIntyre had three goals and Jenny Lancaster three assists as River Hill overpowered Oakland Mills, 8-0.
While River Hill goalies Jordan Levy and Megan Essman saw no action, Oakland Mills' Rebecca Gorton had plenty. She made 15 saves.
River Hill had nearly twice as many shots (20-12) as Glenelg, but couldn't find a way to victory. Glenelg took the game, 3-2, in overtime.
Taking the ball deep into the circle, Lauriann Parker set up the game winner for the Gladiators. Instead of taking the shot herself, she slipped the ball to her sister, Alyssa, who pounded it home.
It was a role Lauriann Parker played all game. She assisted all three Glenelg goals, twice feeding her sister and once feeding Julie Corona.
"All three were really beautiful goals," Kincaid said.
Lindsay McIntyre (two) and Kathy Thorton tallied for River Hill. Taylor Fenlon had an assist.
