Alyssa Parker had two goals in the first half and Mary Kate Olson had two in the second half as Glenelg defeated Mt. Hebron, 4-1, on Oct. 7. The Gladiators' victory created a four-way tie for second place in the county standings.
Entering the contest, Glenelg was undefeated and Mt. Hebron was in second place with only one county loss.
Playing at home, Glenelg held a 2-0 halftime lead, but Mt. Hebron upped its play in the second half. After Olson scored the first of her goals, Hid Fields banged home a shot for the Vikings. Soon after, Mt. Hebron narrowly missed several other scoring opportunities, one was turned away with a nice save by Glenelg keeper Courtney Knill (18 saves).
Knill "came up with a big save that would have made the score, 3-2," said Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland.
"This game was important because we want to have home field advantage for the county championship game," said Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid.
With two games left in the regular season, Glenelg only needs one more victory to clinch a spot in the county title game. The other slot is up for grabs. After games on Oct. 7, Atholton, Mt. Hebron, Reservoir and River Hill are all tied for second in the standings with two losses each.
Reservoir has the toughest remaining schedule. The Gators must play River Hill and Glenelg.
The county championship game will be played Thursday, Oct. 16 at the home of the team with the best record.
