Centennial's Amanda Mathews has five goals this season. Her latest two came in Centennial's 2-1 win over Atholton, but it was a sterling performance by Stephanie Schmid who saved the win for the Eagles. Schmid, a goalkeeper, came in off the bench and stoped a point-blank shot to preserve the victory.
Centennial evened its league record at 3-3 with a 3-1 win over Hammond.
After losing to Reservoir, 2-1, Marriotts Ridge lost two straight in the first annual Linganore Mixer. Thomas Johnson scored on a breakaway in the 26th minute of the game to edge the Mustangs, 1-0, and Linganore beat Marriotts Ridge, 2-0. Samantha Olson had seven saves against Thomas Johnson and six against Linganore.
Glenelg rang up a lot goals in its last two games, beating Oakland Mills, 9-1, and Long Reach, 7-0. Sarah Owen scored Oakland Mills' lone goal, and Dana Wiedel assisted. For Long Reach, which was without three starters, Liz Teoman and defender Puja Patel played well.
Long Reach had to cancel the JV game in order to pull up players for a Saturday evening match up with Wilde Lake. Wilde Lake won, 7-0.
Beth Glaros, Faith Shafer, Kristina Jackson, Gilliam Sawyer (two), Faryn Watts and Ana Vaccaro scored for Wilde Lake.
Glenelg Country School lost two conference games in overtime, first to St. Timothy's, 1-0, and then, 5-4, to Towson Catholic.
Olivia Weinrub scored three goals and Erika Olney had one against Towson Catholic; Weinrub also had two assists.
Maddie Lafuse had 15 saves against St. Tim's and three against Towson. Shayna Keller had five saves against Towson.
Chapelgate lost to Bryn Mawr, 2-1. Allie Kohr scored, assisted by Shannon Stubs, for Chapelgate. Kelly Stambaugh had 12 saves.
Field hockey
Alex Miller scored her first goal of the season as Glenelg defeated Oakland Mills, 10-0. Lauriann Parker added a hat trick to the Glenelg effort.
Ashley Bruns had two goals and an assist and Jenna Boarman, Hid Fields and Kelsey Crouse added single goals as Mt. Hebron defeated Howard, 5-0.
Kristen McGeehan made five stops for Howard.
Triple overtime was the name of the game Oct. 3 as the Reservoir-Marriotts Ridge and Atholton-River Hill games went to strokes in order to determine a winner. Each contest was scoreless through regulation and both sudden-victory overtime periods.
Atholton's Allie Durso, Morgan Bachman and Kelly Brown converted their strokes and keeper Maddy Bottomley stopped two River Hill attempts to seal the Hawks' fate.
Volleyball
Glenelg Country School lost to Beth Tfiloh in three games, but freshman Lauren Phelps tallied a season-high 10 kills. The Dragons defeated St. John's Catholic last week, for their first five-game win in four attempts. Lauren Roepcke (20 assists), Lauren Dawson (9 kills, 6 aces), Lauren Phelps (3 kills, 4 aces), Hannah Leone (8 aces), and Reeva Morton (6 kills, 2 blocks) led the way. Maria Sloan tallied 5 assists, 2 kills, 8 digs, and scored 15 points off her serve, despite netting only one ace.
The Covenant Community School, based in Ellicott City, won the Model Classic Invitational Volleyball Tournament at Gallaudet University. The Bravehearts defeated Holton Arms in the semifinals, and Paul VI Catholic High in the championship match, 25-14, 25-16.
Meredith Runkle and Katelyn Craig were awarded all-tournament honors, and Lillie Happel was named tournament MVP. Happel totaled 44 kills, 15 digs, and 12 aces in the tournament.
It hasn't been a banner year so far for defending state champion Reservoir, which lost five of its first eight matches, but the Gators are starting to show signs of life, defeating Glenelg and Mt. Hebron last week to improve to 5-4 in the county. Hitter Julie Poston and libero Vashti Burke, both excellent servers, have been leading the Gators recently.
Football
Two games Friday night came down to the last second, as Marriotts Ridge defeated Glenelg, 28-20, in overtime, and Wilde Lake defeated Atholton, 22-21, to stay undefeated.
On a fourth-down play in overtime, Marriotts Ridge quarterback Tim Blair fumbled the ball, but it was recovered by teammate Andy Krzys who took it into the end zone to give Marriotts Ridge the lead. Blair tossed a pass to Aaron Dunn for the two-point conversion, but his team wouldn't need it. The defense stopped Glenelg on its overtime attempt to seal the victory.
Glenelg had tied the game at 20 in the fourth quarter when Taylor Sones caught a tipped pass from Gage Trawick and ran it in for a touchdown. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Trawick passed to Ricky Dubois to get the Gladiators within seven.
Glenelg's Colin Osbourne returned a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter, and Blair rushed for two touchdowns on quarterback keepers in the third quarter. He also hit Derek Coleman for a touchdown and two-point conversion in that 20-point frame.
At Atholton, Wilde Lake turned back a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter and held on to beat the Raiders. Danny March scored two touchdowns and threw for another as the Wildecats pulled out the come-from-behind win. It was the second-straight one-point victory for the team.
Atholton's Kory Britton caught a 6-yard TD pass from Kalvin Seamonson, who also had two 1-yard touchdown runs. March tied the game at 15 when he got loose for a 38-yard scoring run and then put Wilde Lake ahead for good, 22-15, with a 17-yard TD run.
Jarrel Epps caught a touchdown pass from March, and rushed for 101 yards. Atholton's Nick Aloi ran for 114 yards against the stout Wildecat defense, and had a 43-yard punt return. Atholton's Tom Hart caught two passes for 57 yards and Matt Robinson was the game's leading tackler with 11 solo and 12 assisted.
River Hill improved to 5-0 with a 50-7 win over Long Reach. The Hawks showed some vulnerability by turning the ball over three times on offense, but made up for it by scoring a combined four touchdowns on defense and special teams.
Michael Campanaro and Kevin Johnson had 80- and 75-yard interception returns for touchdowns and Malek Redd returned kicks of 77 and 74 yards as the Hawks won their 19th straight game.
Luke Hostetler scored two rushing touchdowns and Campanaro added another TD on a 6-yard run for River Hill.
Kwasi Sarpong scored the lone touchdown for Long Reach.
Chris Morris scored three touchdowns as Reservoir held off Oakland Mills, 27-10.
Oakland Mills' Adam Reed scored on a 26-yard pass from Neko Rynn-Mason. Reservoir's Scott Sutton scored on a 73-yard punt return. Nate Frimpong kicked a 39-yard field goal for the Scorpions.
Mark Covington scored twice in a 34-point first quarter as Howard scored seven rushing touchdowns and won its fourth game in a row, 47-6, over Hammond. The Lions defense held Hammond to 25 rushing yards.
Hammond avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Sam Plazak to Willy Kelly. Bobby Stewart caught four passes for 47 yards. Nate Gant had 11 solo tackles.
